Growing up in a small Western North Carolina town, I never saw stories like mine celebrated.
From my early days in my hometown of Taylorsville, to my experiences as a Black student at NC State in the 1970s, to becoming the first Black attorney in my region, this book is my attempt to put that truth on the record.
— Jason Parker
With raw honesty and compelling storytelling, Jason Parker presents his autobiography in much the same way as he presented evidence in the many complex and sometimes humorous cases that he either defended or prosecuted. Through his lens, the reader experiences rural Black America during the tumult of segregation, the Civil Rights Movement, and Affirmative Action. Because his mother always encouraged him to tell the truth, Parker recounts a candid picture of the unseen realities of the legal system, offering profound insights into race, identity, and resilience.
His is a story for these times, one worth celebrating pride and persistence overcoming prejudice.
